  1. I used to work on cat.d-3 at Bethlehem steel back in the 70's if I remember the main building it seemed like a mile long when you drove along side.
  2. I run a b model with a 10 foot flatbed and I have an air seat and an air ride rear axle and when I came home from Macungie I hit a bump that I bottomed out on the seat and was driven up against the roof hurt my neck and my head has a bump on it. Anything with no weight on the back is going to buck. I had 6500lbs on the bed and that helped some. These trucks are not pickups. A tandem will ride a little better. If your running the truck in Pa. god help you.
  3. That fox firetruck was really nice that paint job must of cost a good penny. What an engine it had in it. I got to look over an old kt 450 you just don't see them much even when they were currently used in trucks. The barbecue stand had really good brisket sandwiches. I was told by a vender Jesse James tried to bargain a rebuilt model a tranny off him for cheap.
  4. I bet they will use all that revenue for road improvements. A guy in a 1 ton dump with a load of cold patch and a pointed shovel will fill 14 potholes and they'll tell every one we're broke we have to soak the trucks some more.
  5. We have the big Marion shovel it did swing a 90 yard bucket but today it swings a 12 or 16 yarder it is still working at Hazleton Pa. Down the road is a fairly well known shovel the Anthracite king another walking shovel that swung about a 75 yard bucket for stripping. Just down the road several miles is the town they rebuilt for the movie The Molly Maguires starring Sean Connery and Richard Harris. We have another famous town Centralia the coal vein run to the surface and someone was burning their trash and ended up making everyone move and almost every structure razed I think one or two family's stayed. the whole land under the town was on fire from 1962 till a few years ago. You could drive down one of the roads and the ground would be smoldering and smoking on both sides they finally shut that road down. I would guess if you could do a survey years ago the Macks and Brockways would outnumber all the other brands in my neck of the woods.
  6. I had problems with the gaskets splitting and I took a good look at the tin covers and they were warped I used one of my belt sanders and straitened the base were the gasket goes no leaks when I was done. I worked in a fleet garage and we had 27 macks with the 675's under the hoods and I don't remember finding that problem when I worked there or any of the macks I worked on after. Live and learn ready for macungie now.
  7. I'm from the hard coal regen and I saw a lot of shovel buckets going up highways and byways. Back when coal was king around me a 350 was big. lots of small hp trucks hauling big stuff. Kuminski's drivers would say if it fits it goes d-9's on a single axle autocar with a tandem axle lowboy trailer, 16 yard buckets. Serg said I'll pull it up the mountain and if my 250 Cummins quits pulling we'll get something to help push it .
  8. I got a taller shifter on the right and right next to it on the left is a shorter lever but Mack did it and they are just about at the right height for me. Those really tall shifters make as much sense as ape hangers on the Harleys.
  9. I dragged around freight with a 220 in two trucks and you left early because you never arrived early.
  10. That old autocar with the built in bunk reminds me of mine that I ran up and down the eastern seaboard 262 with a 4x4 trans. Boy did I swelter down in Florida running the thing. But it is one of my all time favorite trucks other than my b model. I'm real happy to see that one in the picture.
  11. Anyone going to Macungie? Other Dog as always your photo's are very nice thank you.
  12. If my memory is right I think you would draw down the three valve cover bolts till they seat against the shoulder on the bolt. Right?
  13. I got things taken apart and the lower gaskets that go between the block and jake spacer plate were good. I glued the rubber gasket on the spacer with the green cat cement. Both rubber gaskets that went between the jake spacer and the original valve cover were split lengthwise that was were the oil was coming out. I think there is too much pressure on the top gasket and it is splitting them. I'm going to do an experiment and try a different way of sealing the top cover.
  14. . Years ago if I remember they were cork? I called Watt's and Cooks no soap any ideas I will have to do something the front spacer for the jake is weeping and making a little mess I would like to get the leak fixed before I go down to Macungie. Thanks
  15. Rob thanks for posting that bit with that little girl acting like she needs more Valium. I understand her pleas but is it genuine? or a paid put-up job? I really enjoyed that commentator setting things straight. I watch the cars hauling one kid at a time out to the school right behind the bus that we all pay for so the kids can ride to school. There is a semi private park out at the end of my road and on the weekends there is three or four soccer games and they are from down in the city I was told most of the kids don't play outside during the week and I guess they can't play anymore without the parent's telling them how to play. Boy are things different than when I was young I was always building a tree house or crawling around the rock ledges in my back yard or playing with my matchbox trucks. we played army, cowboys and indians and made rubber guns and slingshots we all lived and made our own fun. Everyone that I hung around with didn't know jacksh-t about the green earth we just wanted to be kids. I may be an old sh-t to young people now but I bet we had alot more fun back then.
  16. If I was close I would come over and have a good time helping you bolt all those nice clean parts on a nice clean frame way better than trying to repair a part on a truck or machine with five inches of grease and dirt covering everything.
  17. Back in the dark ages Detroit diesel made use of two part pistons if I remember correctly they were for city bus usage.
  18. I didn't know the old 220's had a special sound I owned two of them and they didn't make as much noise as the 318 d. d. I drove. Now the 262 I had in my autocar that did sound better on a long pull. Those 220"s were so slow I think the sound got there way before you did.
  19. I have had the pleasure of working on the same model tractor with the sh-t bucket loader frame and the front mount dist. is a real pain to adjust the points. I had a 52 it had a side mount dist. way easier to mess with the points.
  20. I am retired now and I don't think I could work for anyone anymore I think retirement was the best thing that I did for myself in a long time. I hope you find happiness in your retirement Other Dog.
  21. I remember back in the 70's a company was advertising spring shackles with roller bearings in theory that design was not an ideal setup roller bearings are made for 360 rotation think like the bottom end of a harley. That clutch shaft should do quite well with the bushings and good grease and if you want to get carried away you could cut some grooves for the grease to get out in the bushes if you get a tight fit on the shaft. Remember true 660 aluminum bronze is very hard and tough.
  22. If someone would bring that assm. to my shop I see two different repairs weld up the worn shaft with my 110 lincoln mig and throw the shaft in the lathe and turn it down it would work for years if you greased it or get some 660 bronze bushings made up and leave the shaft alone and grease the crap out of it if you were really fussy after you cut down the shaft you could caseinate the outside it would be hard for the rollers.
  23. If someone put antiseze on everything the 10 years ago they were put in.
  24. I had a good friend that would preach get us out of the un and that was 15 years ago I did wonder about his thought prosses then but I now realize he was wiser than many others I knew then and now.
  25. I am happy to see your son in the shop with you I didn't get that opportunity in my youth my step dad was all about sports and I was all about anything with an engine.
