  1. Unrelated topic,sorta, some of you have seen the show"jay lenos garage "I'm sure. He has driven every possible vehicle including a freightliner road tractor,and a huge San Francisco fire truck.I'd like to see him drive an Aussie road train! he's not a trucker,but with the right trainer he'd figure it out. What a fun show that would be! Those road train drivers are my heroes! Like trucking here before the interstate plus some! Like the wild west ! Saw a u tube video of an Aussie driving a right hand drive b61 with a quad box splitting with his left hand,pulling a single flatbed with 3 axles in the city recently.conservatively rating those 6 axles could have been grossing over 100000. Don't know what their weight laws are...awesome!
  2. MmIoOfAm looking to find a b  model to fix up down here in Florida.just throwing around a few ideas.have any of u heard of a b series Cummins swap into a b model? Does a bell housing exist to adapt to a triplex .I know a guy who put a 10 speed road ranger behind one in a f350 Ford hotshot used a stock bell housing. The. Torque specs are similar or higher as is the horsepower,compared to a673. 1000 lb lighter.I realize this is sacrilege! Would prefer a 673 if I could find a good runner.has to b a compound as the shifting is half the fun in a "hobby truck".thanks!

  3. Ahh,the infamous "sidewinder"! Used to haul steel for a company that ran all r and u model macks.All "day cabs" got a few f model sleepers in 1974.What a hassle it was sleeping in a "day cab"you carried a pillow or furniture pad and put a"pop case between the seats,and laid across it,or laid over the wheel.we were allowed 8dollars for a motel! Most t.s. Had bunk houses or small sleeping rooms,but you couldn't always time you're break to end up at a t.s. The u model was a practical tk,if you were driving in the city or pulling a longer trl. Before deregulation.
  4. Wow! Knew they had a few dragsters,tommy ivo's four engine rail,and a couple hemi two engine dragsters,also a couple land speed record racers,but that's the first Two engine truck I've seen! I do recall something about the two engine flathead tks. You mentioned,may have been in overdrive magazine. Love to restore that two engine cabover and go to a truck show and quietly disconnect the driveline and related parts (with everyone thinking it's one engine and slide out the two engines!!)
  5. When you mentioned the rear axles being out of line 3/4 of an inch I was reminded of a950 Ford 534gas job I drove when we were building the city of Margate Florida. The tandem were so worn they moved left to right at least 3inches,you'd get dizzy if you watched them in the mirrors! The thing used 2 gallons of oil in the hoist every day! When you lowered the hoist oil would squirt about a foot out of the seals! Was a5and3,but you better not forget and try to use the aux. The thing would lock up and you would have to unjam it with a crowbar! Didn't really need the aux., that big 534 would pull stumps on it's own! Was a "jobsite" truck,wouldn't even pass Florida's state insp.forgot to mention,the pto for the hoist would vibrate into gear when you were going down the road! On day we were going to the "staging area" (about a 1/4 of a mile) and my friend in the pickup behind me was honking the horn and waving his arms the darn dump body was going up was mt fortunately! These youngsters that go from driving school into a brand new "horse" don't know how lucky they are!
  6. The dude that got me interested in otr trucking and taught me to shift a triplex,used to drive for a dump truck outfit in pgh pa called Ed W Texter co. They had an all b model fleet including those awful b42 gas burners! They had an English bulldog mascot named...you guessed it Mack.Thought of that when I saw the bulldog statue. The guy I mentioned took me for my 1st ride in a big truck,a Brockway 361 I think.Had a 220 Cummins with an Eaton "bogie" that's a 5 speed main with a3 speed differential.Shifter looks like a13 speed,but you split it like a 2 speed. Drove one yrs later in a "crackerbox Jimmy" only other one I've ever seen.Darn thing used to jump out of gear(the differential not the tranny),very annoying!.The company was going out of business,quit maintaining their trucks.One night the supv.called me for a run said I have 3 tractors you can choose from.The 1st one the alternator doesn't charge,the 2nd one has a gear missing(10 spd ranger, that's 2gears right? ) the 3rd one only one set of brakes working (on the tag axle) which one do you want? These were 4070transtar cabovers,night run snow on the ground! " I don't want any of them"! "You want your job don't you?" I took the one with one with only one set of brakes. I'll bore you with the rest of that story later.
  7. I know you guys are gearheads right? If you haven't heard about the truck an engineer named Lloyd Wolf designed,built and patented,it will blow your mind! During ww2 they needed powerful trucks to haul tanks and other military equip.diesel engines light enough for a motor truck weren't powerful enough before turbo and computer managed systems.wolf took an international cabover and chassis and put two gmc 6bangers (gas) side by side on a sliding framework.The main engine was a stick shift,the second engine was an automatic which kicked in when it was needed! Hooked them together with a chain or gears to a standard truck differential.The second engine idled when at highway speeds to save gas,much like today's hybrid cars. The whole framework,with engines,etc slid out the front for service.In 7 minutes! The whole deal can be googled,was in Hemmings in 2014.shows an early 50s "cornbinder" cabover.

Just a thought ,on the old b models and similar antique trucks,southern air and vintage air make a turnkey r134 air conditioner setup for street rods and antique cars.sells for about 800 bucks could probably be adapted to an old mack .street rodder mag. Has ads also may be sold by summit racing equip. You could put the condenser under the bumper like where they put lights,maybe drill some big holes in the bumper.

On the subject of quality control I was in the welding business in the middle 70s and I built a complete set of Milwaukee and Rockwell power tools all American made.sometime in the last two yrs. Milwaukee went offshore! Their older model grinders,drills etc, are still heavy an look the same, prices are still among the highest in the tool industry,but I. Noticed they are offering some lightweight cheap looking tools at a lower price. I needed a 4.5 inch grinder to complete my set.found it in a pawnshop for 38 bucks. Made in USA. I'm only gonna use it occasionally .Will buy a harbor freight 11 dollar grinder for my dirty work and throw it away when it "pukes" I know you guys work on your trucks and may assume that Milwaukee tools are still made here,they hide it well but nope! Also Rockwell,ridgid,Bosch,Makita Dremel etc are made in Mexico and China. Happy 4th of July!
  15. The joys of computerized equipment.I've converted two older cars and my daily driver pickup back to "pre emission" specs . All carbureted .but we have no state inspection in Florida and no emissions test in my county.however in the commercial truck world u have the annual inspection. Everywhere! The safety inspection. Is necessary.but the emissions will get worse every yr.! Be glad you're not running in ca.! I used to run the west coast when they passed nafta .the dot inspectors had rows of those junk mexican trucks lined up (to be rejected)!.
  16. You guys bring back a lot of memories haven't heard about a "Canadian spread" drive in yrs! Could b worse how about a "Michigan train" always wondered if they kept a dwarf or chimpanzee or something in the cab to dump all those axles on a turn,also do they keep a tire man on retainer?!

  20. My 1st truck was a 39 diamond t 201 with a manly hand crank boom had a Hercules flathead 6 retrofitted Eaton 2 speed axle Clark 4speed crash box. The ole man built a cable control for the 2speed with an old hand brake handle sticking out of the. Floor! Bought it from him for 50bucks,when he sold his salvage yard.I ended up giving it back to him and he traded it for a 20 ton Braden winch for a wrecker he was building.the guy who has the35 d t has a couple other dt's.in lemmings,. The darn thing keeps changing my h's to l's but you know what I mean! He must collect them.one Is a beautiful 49 road tractor.
  21. Those of us who actually drove  over the road know they took a lot of liberties with tractor types in convoy! Looks like some Hollywood type went to a truck auction and bought the cheapest trucks he could find.that r model day cab with the "kangaroo guard" looks like an oilfield truck

  22. The best riding cabover.iv'e ever driven was an 85ml600 mack single axle spring ride ,much better than new air ride internationals. Strangely spec'd truck 300 6 speed with lo hole.probably used as a mini wheeler dump.Down here in gator country you are allowed 44000 on an axle group.therefore you can haul 73280 on at tandem trailer and a single axle tractor.I pulled a 50 aluminum drop deck used as a hotshot.the mack had little air bags. On the cab.
  23. Some of you May have seen the beautiful Red b75 for sale in Washington state the radiater looks similar to the tanker in question. Kinda bizarre I'd rather have that mack than any 100k street rod I can think of! And I dig street rods!
  24. Not an expert on the frames but Mr Hancock made it all clear! Now I know why mack and Broadway shared cabs for so many years.international,Hendrickson,diamond t(my list truck) and I think Hayes and federal shared cabs too. I could be wrong but I think Marmon had its own unique sheet metal.fascinating!
