  1. Thanks for the info. I thought the same but had doubts. By me overfilling, as I have done I am getting seepage around top bolts to cover of the rear end. Now this can easily be corrected.
  2. Hello, I am only one that probably needs help on this one but I can use some advise. Have a B Model, single drive axel, and don't correctly know if I am filling up rear-end right or not. It has Dual reduction box on front, with fill plug on top, very rear of 3rd member, slightly below the "Mack" raised letter is fill plug. Question, do I fill in from the top plug on top of Dual reduction box till it grease runs out of fill plug on rear of 3rd member housing?? Also, living in the south, what wt. should I use? The dual reduction box sits so high above the 3rd member I feel that I am not putting in enough grease to also give lube to dual reduction gears if I stop when grease starts running out of rear end fill plug. Also I have a sound, not a knock but almost like a wrist pin sound. Could a bad injector produce a sound that seems its coming from within the motor. Engine runs smooth, 653. Engine has not changed sounds in the 3 years I have been running it. Any help to above would be greatly appreciated. I have the Mack operation book but time to go to the experts. Cliff of Georgia
  3. Thanks again for all replies as I'm checking out each at this time. It does have independent oil supply.
  4. Thanks Guys for replies, I'll check out all suggestions given.
  5. Need some help as I got new rebuilt compressor from Fleet Pride several months ago but getting sludge oil in tank. I routinely drain tank after coming back from a show/gathering. It is a 1964 B 61. The engine its self uses very little oil, if any on a run. But I always was told engine oil use does not effect oil collected in the air tanks, only this is caused by bad rings in the compressor. I have drained off the tank enough to clean out older residue from replaced compressor. Any suggestions will be helpful. If it looks like I have a bad new/rebuilt compressor then I will deal with that with Fleet Pride. Thanks. Cliff
  6. Have B61 with 653 engine, lot of miles but cranks with nothing but hot batteries in dead winter. Have replaced air compressor with factory rebuilt one but still getting about 1 third of cup of oil sludge after running about 6 hour trip. My thinking is with up-dated compressor this should be eliminated. The old 653 uses some oil, about 2 qts. on 400 miles pulling 26 ft. lowboy and 4500 lb. 2 cylinder JD tractor. Other question is what is correct temp. on heat guage running in mild weather with shutters operating okay. Temp. is now about 165 but I put a 165 degree thermostat in while back in top hose to keep cab warm quicker. Now I don't know if it should operate at higher temp. to get better service on engine.I'll remove thermostat if need be. Engine operates at 9 lb. while idling and 20-25 lbs. on road. I pulled pan 2 yrs. back and put 2 flat washers shimming up oil pump spring and got 4 more lbs. from this. Keeping it around 1800-1900 RPM, 50 MPH gets me there ande back without fail. any ideas on oil sludge from air compressor and idea if running too cool on heat guaage will be appreciated.
