My Mother-in-law, who lives in a rural area up near Buffalo, had an issue with her mailbox repeatedly being run over by the snowplow. The mailbox was the proper distance from the road, but that didn't stop it from being hit three or four times each winter for about three years. Finally she asked my Brother-in-law if he had a solution He worked for the local power company and sometimes drove an auger truck. One day during the summer, he augered a new hole about 4' deep next to the mailbox. That Saturday, he returned and installed a 7' piece of railroad rail in concrete. The next Saturday, he transferred the mailbox to the new post and removed the old one. First decent snowfall that year, the snowplow hit her mailbox again, but this time, it spun the plow around and damaged the wing. It's been over 20 years since and they have never hit it again!
