I got my column all mounted and I’m happy with the wheel placement.  It’s very comfortable from driver seat.    Now  my question is.    What is this bell shaped piece on top of the column?   Can it be removed and if so how?     If I can remove it I will be able to mount my turn signal switch and trolly valve higher up.   

I like seeing the ways guys overcome issues with these old trucks as much as the truck itself 

My b67 had 2 tanks just like that.    

I don’t remember off the top of my head but I know it was the same size as my stearling tank I have on now.   Also same as freightliner tanks I looked at.     I’ll check later for ya. About 24” I think. 

That’s what mine is.   It’s a Nelson.   On mine a buddy shortened it 3” or 4” so it fit right and didn’t go way up the window.    I have it as close to the fender as possible about a finger thickness.     On the 70 series B’s you have more space to slide it lower.  Idk about a b61

on a side  note my buddy is a welder/fabricator.   He said this was the worst stainless he ever welded and was not at all happy with his welds on it.      

Local yard around here has or had an early R 10 wheeler with a turbo 673 and a trtl720 in it.

Do the 61 and 42 sit higher then a 67?   Idk if I would have ran into axle clearance or not.    I couldn’t get it that far down.  

After a few hours I got it out.  But not after using sawzall on shaft above box.    Floor layout gave me issues and also tilt of engine kicked oil pan flange and sump.   Once I got the sector shaft below the bottom flange of the frame I couldn’t get the box below the flange on the block the oil pan bolts to.       Then after cutting column off about 3” above box I got it wedged between spring and sump.    I don’t  really remember what I did then but eventually it came out.     After several hours I was running out of blood and patience.    It may come out all together but it didn’t for me.      

I’m guessing that how turned up it is makes a difference.   

Mine seams to line up with the blow by pipe and below that is my tie rod.      I wasn’t sure if there was enough room to slide shaft through the frame rail.      I don’t remember if the tie rod is front or back originally mines behind.    

B67 steering box.     Will it come out of the truck with the engine in and cab on?    I’m not sure but I think this is a specific question for a b67.   I think the 61’s are mounted a little back further.      I’m not sure.     I don’t want to get it stuck part way then have it in the way to pull the engine, and I’m not ready to pull the engine at this time.    

I agree vlad.    When it comes to mixing parts one must be careful.   My front axle is modern freightliner,  my pump and  steering box came off the same truck also modern freightliner which had the same 8.3 c series Cummins in that I’m also switching to this winter.       So I’m theory my steering should feel just like driving a mid 2000 freightliner fl70 or fl80 down the road.    

I’ve been messaging with davehummel on this topic because he has done a similar conversion to his, but Here is a pic of my current progress.     I don’t think This steering box would work on a truck with an original axle.   There wouldn’t be enough room to turn to the right very far.    

I was trying to remember or get to talk to my dad, but the company he was leased  to  had some guys with older trucks.  They had to run a gps based system when there was no ecm to plug into.

Merry Christmas all. To the most knowledgeable group I’ve found on the web.  

It’s a 5000 pound lift and I have a few thousand pounds of suitcase weights to hang on the back if I need too.   I don’t really know what the 673 weighs but my cherry picker is only rated for 1 ton handled the 8.3 ok.  

Forks are 46”.    Off the top of my head it’s a 42-3fg25.     Gonna make the boom about 6’ long I have two pieces of 3”x8” box about 28” long I’m going to use for the forks to go through and build off of them.  Something like this but I’m going to make the boom raise up at a little angle.     My garage is a little small and I have to work through the door opening.  This will give me a little more clearance  

Agree 100%.         I’d just like to gather ideas of what people like.

One of the tubes could be a cold weather intake with a flapper in it right?

I love  project pictures.    They give me motivation to work on my stuff.  

I remember reading on here sometime in the last few years somebody else was looking for “skinny” rims for an old fire truck.   Idk what that outcome was either.
