As I recall, you can also cut a pipe the expanse of the inside of the frame rails. Lay the pipe crossways tight up to the open bell. Insert 2 bolts about 5” long into the bellhousing mount face wherever is close to the pipe... maybe 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock. Rest the engine onto the cross-pipe via the over-length bell bolts.

I thought of using a chain around frame and some bell housing bolts but they are only 3/8” bolts and didn’t know if 2 would be heavy enough.

  2.  Came  right out once I figured what to do at clutch linkage.   Now any suggestions how to hold the engine up?    It’s currently sitting on a large oak block and 20 ton bottle jack off bell housing .   The trucks going to have to move forward about 20’ when it’s time to pull engine (my garage isn’t big enough).

Judging by those tires in the picture I think he's got that covered already!

At the moment 2” won’t mean much at all. I understand terry’s point though.    Never know what the next project will be.  E79E2C28-BA32-44C0-9DF7-4464626F8422.thumb.jpeg.126c56f2b4a7a9c28f6f2a24c67e6a1b.jpeg

  4. I borrowed my buddies jack for this weekend.   It’s a very nice simple design utilizing a bottle jack.     I believe it was some type of military surplus. I decided to copy it and build my own.   So far I had a lot of the stuff laying around.     I’m going to a 4 wheel setup instead of 3 though, and to simplify some thing it’s gonna sit about 2” higher off the ground

We have the harbor freight truck trans jack, works well but you may want to make your own deck adapter to hold the transmission. The "safety" chain is a joke, and the 4 angle iron feet that bolt to the deck are slippery.  Jack handle is very nice, it pivots around so you can operate it from almost anywhere.

The jack is also nice to use for spoke hubs.

Thanks too!  One thing nice about the HF stuff is the price.  I’ve had a few things I welded on / modified as soon as I brought them home.   It was almost what I wanted when I bought it, but til I was done it was what I wanted.

I have the jack you need. It's yours to borrow if you want too.

I greatly appreciate the offer, but I really don’t like borrowing tools.    Your kindness does show how great of group this really is, considering I don’t think our paths have ever crossed.  Thank you!

  7. I can justify spending $300-$400 but not $1,000+.   It’s something that hopefully doesn’t get used again for a long time.    I treat tools as a investment.   They will be with me for a long time, and you get what you pay for.

That being said I’ve had some very good luck with harbor freight tools in the past, and then some that weren’t worth the extra breath it took to open them.

You'll have a lot more room under the hood with a C8.3 Cummins for sure. Plenty of power too. You going to air to air it or run without intercooling? I've had C series on generator sets push 300kw for hours on end but they will require charge air cooling. Versatile tractors used the series juiced to 350hp and they will live if not abused.

I’m going air to air.   The engine itself is 4”-5” shorter front to back.   My plan is to keep it mounted back in the doghouse gaining the extra space in the front.   Then mounting stock radiator on back side of support instead of on the front like originally.     This and loosing my shutters should give me enough room to stick an intercooler in front of radiator.    Its going to take some time and footwork to find a 3” thick one to fit in the stock grill shell.  If I can’t find a stock one in the bone yards I have a large one out of a rear engine buss with the correct tanks to bring the inlet and outlet out above the radiator tank.   A local radiator shop told me he could recore  it to the width I need.        As for hp this is a 250hp according to the cpl code.   Buddy said we are going to change the pump timing from 12-17 degrees, adj the anaroind, and put a O fuel plate in it.   Should be a safe and reliable 300hp without any parts.

i love when people tell you what you should do with things you work for and pay for with your money. you should have left  it sitting in the weeds somewhere rusting away instead of doing what you want with it. ill bet the coronavirus made you do it. keep up the good work

No coronavirus for me.  I’m stocked up on high quality China made safety masks from harbor freight.  Lol.     I respect a lot of people’s knowledge and experience on this forum.    I really like seeing pictures of people’s projects(including yours).  That’s why I post mine.   There are a lot of trucks on here that are absolutely beautiful originals.   Some sit in museums and others that should.    I really respect the time, skill, and $ people put into them.   That being said, I don’t want a truck like that.   I’ve had this hooked to a pulling sled a dozen times, drove through down pours, and had it stuck in the mud.   I get home dump a gallon of oil in it and it’s good for the next time.     My goal now is to give “back in black” some burnout competition at the gerhart show. Lol
