The 707 was one of Mack's best gas engines, ever. As long as it was taken care of, it should be fairly bombproof.

Mike ask your daughter if she has taken the kids to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoake Island...Many folks dont even know about the place. It is a great and cheap way to blow a few hours on a rainy morning or afternoon. Roanoake Island is about 45 mins south on 158 from Duck. Tell her to go south on 158, follow the signs for Roanoake Island, cross the bridge and go to the first traffic light and make a right. Then go about 2-3 miles, follow the signs for the airport and the aquarium and you'll make a left eventually. They always have something going on for the little ones that adults enjoy also.

The family and I vacationed this past week on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We have been going there for years, staying with an old family friend who lives there year-round. He is a retired Batallion Chief of the Camden NJ Fire Department. They live in Avon, which is on Hattaras Island, about 6 miles north of Cape Hattaras and the Cape Hattaras Lighthouse (which was moved a few years ago by the way, if you are boored and have nothing better to do one night, google "Cape Hattaras Lighthouse Move.") On Wednesday, we ventured down to Ocracoke Island. To get there, one takes NC Hwy 12 all the way to the end of Hattaras Island, and then you take a 45 minute ferry ride over. The island is about 9.3 sq miles with only a small portion (Ocracoke Village) being populated, and even then only about 950 residents at that. They rely heavily on year-round (but especially summer) tourism. There is a bar/pub on Ocracoke called Howards Pub that is world famous, and the wife and I love their blackened tuna sammiches that they serve with a special dill tartar sauce. The residents and businesses naturally rely on trucks to get them their goods and services. Here are some pics I thought everyone would like. First shot is one of the ferries coming into Hattaras while we wait for an outbound. You can see two trucks on board. Second and third shots- the two rigs coming off the ferry. Fourth shot- a Freightliner condo with a pup hauling furniture is guided onto the ferry by the deckhands. These guys work seven 12-hour days and then have seven days off. Fifth shot- another view of the Freightliner with cars stacked around it. They really stack em tight and maximize a lot of space. But they also have to leave some room for everyone to walk around. Sixth shot- my Chevy Silverado on the left- The one that Yarnall might call "the burgundy streak." Seventh shot- on the return trip. What can Brown do for you? Deliver your packages to the island via ferry!!! Also a lumberyard truck from Kitty Hawk coming back from making a delivery. Kitty Hawk is about 70 miles all the way up NC Hwy 12 and 158. Eighth shot- inside the passenger lounge, where you can go to get out of the heat. I'd like to have the air conditioning in here for my entire house. I swear the vents had icecicles hanging from them. Last one- just a random deck shot. If anyone ever has the opportunity to visit the Outer Banks I highly reccomend it, and I am sure anyone who has been there would agree.

Ohhhh the stories I could tell......I grew up "on the wrong side of the tracks" in a town where the parking lot at the high school was filled with beemers, mercedes, and other top-line cars that the kids drove to school every day, courtesy of their Doctor, Lawyer or other high-paying professional parents. I was growing up in the right-hand seat of two F-model macks on weekends and summers (at least until I was about 12.) I hung out with my Dad at the local gas station where I pushed the broom, pumped gas, broke down and mounted tires, changed oil, etc etc. I was overweight, always the last kid to be picked in gym, never got invited to parties, and was ridiculed for being a volunteer firefighter and wanting to be a career firefighter. I know what it's like to be persecuted, and I also know what it's like to be "tested" or have your "balls broke." Looking back, i think about some of the stuff I went through. Call me a primma donna, but I'm sitting here thinking that maybe 12 years old is a bit young to go through this kind of stuff. I dunno, could be me. I wouldnt change anything about my childhood or teenage years- but I have to wonder if I would be any different now. And now that I am a father of three of my own- wow doesnt THAT make you think hard!!!! I think cutting Vinny a break may be warranted here. At the same time Vinny needs to learn to take what we all say with a grain of salt....But thats just it.....LEARN......And at the same time, maybe we shouldnt push his buttons so hard.......

140GZ (F554G) Waukesha Hmmmm yes, perhaps...But right now I am running a 3200rpm engine....If I swapped a lawn boy into there (which I would never, ever do even on a dare) I would have to change out the gearing of BOTH axles, or I'll be doing 40mph for the rest of my life.....But it aint gonna happen unless I come across a junker somewhere with the proper gearing. Thats why the plan is, if I ever have to convert her to an oil burner, she's getting a factory remanufactured 3208 Kitty....They have a 2800rpm version right out of the crate that matches my horsepower and torque curve almost exactly. And they are not smoke blowing oil dripping lawn boy wanna be's.

Let me count the ways: 1. Had the three anklebiters with me. That R-Model International cab is not, I repeat NOT big enough for myself plus two booster seats and one baby seat. 2. 100+ miles from the house (Exit 67 of I-78) @3.5MPG......The old lady kind of has this thing about paying the mortgage, feeding the kids, etc. She's annoying like that. 3. Cooling problems on really hot days......There is a bad head gasket or perhaps a cracked head, on hot days the head must flex just enough that it allows water to pass through somewhere and burn. Macungie is 18.5 miles from the house- before I left to go home had to add about a gallon of coolant, and then about another gallon when I got her home. On a cool day (like Bethlehem's Christmas Parade) she runs fine, no issues. 4. There is something about riding in that thing on a hot day, with the engine out in front of you and no insulation on the firewall...going to Macungie at 0700 in the morning is one thing, driving it 100 miles one way at 4:00pm in the afternoon......uhhhhhh no thanks!!!!! One of these years I plan on trucking it out there.
