  1. Gentleman, Wrapping up a rebuild on my 53 L model hydrovac brake system. Was wondering if anyone knew the recommended DOT rated fluid for this setup. I have used DOT 3/4 Synthetic in the past and was looking for suggestions as I cannot find recommendations in my literature. Thanks for any info.
  2. Sounds good, any thoughts on "modern" red grease. She had gnarly brown yellowish in there before. I would think the red is better as it is rated for higher heat before it melts. Couldnt find any literature on this. Thanks again!!!
  3. Gentleman, I am wrapping up a front axle rebuild on my 53 L Model . I was wondering if anyone had or knew the torque spec for the front spindle bearing nut OR an accepted procedure for tightening them. Typically I used to torque them to 200 ft lbs then back off 1 full turn and torque to 50lbs (all while rotating the wheel). Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated!
  4. Hello, Yes the truck has air brakes and a hand lever shaft parking brake. I purchased the truck off of an older gentleman. It does go into pump and I briefly pumped it from a hydrant. I was not able to get water from tank to pump and I am guessing the valve may need some attention, (shouldnt be too big of a deal). The pump could use a service as I dont believe the previous owner had pumped it much in the 15 or so years he had it. The tanks fills and hold water but some of the valves drip and need attention if you plan on carrying water around. The passenger side door needs a window regulator, I have sourced someone with several parts cache for this. The underside of the truck looks like a 51 year old truck, in my opinion. There are some weeping oil seals here and there but nothing too serious that I can see. As far as underside rust I did not find much on the underside of the truck. The body compartments have some rust on the forward walls from what I am attributing to wheel and tire water sling (typical spot for the C-Models) but the compt floors appear solid. The truck does have power steering. 12v Pos ground. Wiring is in pretty good shape as most all lighting and ign function. As far as price, I am entertaining offers, I am realistic on the price and will let it go VERY reasonably. She is not perfect, but with some TLC and the right collector / enthuisast she would be a great piece. Feel free to email me at firepipe62@hotmail.com and I will give you my cell # if you would like to chat regarding any further questions. Hope this helps, Jeff

  9. Albert, I am always looking for or considering any L Model that has the right parts / components? Do you have something for sale?
  10. Hey fellas, I'm looking for L Model fire truck chassis parts. I am considering converting my hydrovac system (53 LS85) to air brakes. If someone has a L model that has an air brake system on it, I would be interested in It. I do not need sheet metal or body parts at this time as my truck is fairly complete but I have been attempting to locate a chassis that may have a bum motor but a complete air brake system, that I can salvage the brake system off of. I am hopeful of finding backing plates with cams and chambers, tanks and brackets, compressor for the engine, foot pedal, valves, gauges, and I am planning on running new poly lines. If anyone has or knows of any trucks, info would be appreciated. Second topic, I have a friend looking to unload a 63 c-85 (gas, air brakes, manual, 750gpm) pumper with 27,000 miles. The body is pretty solid however it has a botched paint job. The truck appears to be fairly complete with the exception of the bell. It has been stored indoors and the chrome it has appears pretty clean. Currently it has a snapped output shaft where the drive shaft goes to the parking drum. (Someone tried to move the truck with the shaft brake set and snapped it off), I am going to reach out to transaxle for a replacement. Other than that a set of batt's and she would fire right off. From what I have seen the truck saw service in Folsom PA. Open to offers. Thanks Guys!
  11. BMT- I just picked up four new front wheel cyl for my L Model from Napa of all places. They are perfect matches from what I had and if it would help you I can get ya the Napa part numbers off of the boxes. I had a local shop reline the the orig shoes and a guy I know had NOS inner wheel seals. I thought that at some point I had seen an engine driven air compressor that Mack had equipped the truck with that was bolted to the side of the block and it was on a 707 Gas........Lemme know if I can help on the brake numbers......
  12. If you still have any of the Mack extingushers my 1953 L Model would love to have on mounted on its running board!
  13. Hey Fellas, I have a 1953 Mack L Model Types 85 pumper. I have had this truck for about 8 yrs now along with others. I am currently about midway thru a restoration and I am working on the hyd brake system. My question to everyone here is, has anyone ever had the idea of, know anything about, or ever wanted to place an older body on a more modern chassis in order to gain the more modern benefits, which in this case would be an air brake system. I know that they have made trucks in this year range that were air brake equipped even with a gas motor but as we know the trucks for parts in that configuration are not always that easy to come by. So I was kicking around the idea of placing my L model onto maybe a C model chassis........ OR Locating a l model that I may be able to salvage the complete brake system off of. I would assume that the axles were the same and the air brakes or hydraulic brakes would be the same. So thoughts folks would be appreciated. Thanks all
  14. Hey Folks, New to the forum. Looking for some suggestions. I am currently rebuilding my front axle brakes (hydraulic) and stripping and repainting my front hubs and drums. I was looking for some info and advice regarding a suggested grease to use to repack the hubs and bearings. The grease I removed was failry heavy and I was wondering if it needs that kind of viscosity or if a modern high speed red bearing grease would do. My main concern is that too thin of a grease may seep past the wheel seals and end up in the drum creating the exact same problem I am attempting to fix. Second question is, does anyone know the torque spec for the spindle nuts for the front bearings. I checked all my paperwork I have and don't see anything. I typically always used to seat the bearings in and then back off until the hub spun without too much drag and then set the lock nut and tab. Thanks for any suggestions.............
