  1. In all the fleets,Ihave worked for,we changed the cartridge, and spitter valve once a year, usually 1-2 months before winters onset. The cartridge also got changed earlier if constantly cycled,or left alot of water on ground when cycles a couple times

  2. Are any of the axles locking up? Could be treadle valve or a sticking relay valve to either drives or steer, the crack pressure is off,and you get a sudden burst when it does.,overtightened slacks can do this also to close to drum and when you push a tad harder it'll lck up. Also is this an ABS system or standard system or an old unit with the i beleive is the 1121 system.(never can remember the number, the early 70's antilock system).

  3. I am 99% sure it is an AD2,we had them on our old units. Took about 1/2 hour to remove, clean, change, the cartridge, and do the prge valve. Also looks like a heating unit on it,check for proper operation on it also when apart

  4. If this was a west coast(california) unit, the light was a steady burning red warning light. East coast used lights such as mars oscolating lights or a roto ray. California claimed a steady burning red light worked better than a rotating light in same position. As for mfg. I am not sure, who made it,but could be a mack product itself, cause all our 1950's models we had (50,54,59) all parts were labeled with mack emblem of the time

  5. CF600 series are what REAL fire trucks are suppose to look like. As for tough, consider FDNY ran them HARD for 10 years front line service, and 5-7 years as reserves, then they get snatched up in a heartbeat by us collectors, and especially volunteer fire depts. I personnally know 4 FF's from FDNY that miss thier reliability, and have told me some guys put thier ALF/Freightliners OOS on purpose, just so they get a CF to use. BUT thier reserve numbers are dwindling fast. Though FDNY still buys mack chassis for thier sattelite unit, and special service units.

  6. remember when lebanon county was mack fire apparatus central? Think just bout everyone in the county owned at least 1 mack engine. The unit I miss is our '54 B95 quad. Understand only 4 of her type was made. She is suppose to be in a museum in alabama. All others of her style had 65' aerial ladders on them. She had the deck for it,but it was used to hold the big spotlights of the era. So if any of the members from Bama knows where she is at,PLEASE let me know.

  7. THX she just won more awards for Best appearing, and equipped for her age group. She does NOT lose when the parade catogory is best appearing. She is our pride and joy!! To bad she is due for replacement in 08-09,she'll be 30 in 2009.:angry: Lot of young guys, and old wanna keep her as a reserve piece :thumb:

  8. you should be able to measure the OD of fill area and get a cap to match. I used to have 5 different sizes, till I went to work for a dealer, and then all but 2 disappeared. I was lucky we had a "big truck" graveyard near where I worked. They had tons of makes, and years of trucks in thier yard.

  9. Not sure of any wholesale tire outlets for truck tires. you probaly have 11.00-20's on her as our 79 does. Tube types are hard to find especially in that size. I went through friends to get deals on our tires, and only goodyear had decent tires for it. Retreads for the drives might be best bet and cost effective, and most have outstanding warranties, some better than new warranties. We went through our boro using the goodyear government contract, and still spent over a grand on all 6. If you go retreads go with bandag or oliver retreads, they have best warranties. Make sure you get load range G or H for her also

  10. yep it is. Factory is 30yards from house so its real fresh, and add the smokehouse scent in air..yumm,and got the main chocolate factory 3 miles due west of house also. try the bologna fried, its great also, just be careful not to burn it

  11. I have had to install electric fuel pumps,at my old job for us air express. They were put on perkins diesels, cause no mechanical pumps were available. It was noisy, and no power, and limited speed, cause the electric pump only pumps at one set speed, half throttle, full throttle were the same. Only good thing was it was easy to bleed the glass on block fuel filter. you might be able to install the elctric pump on her to use as a primer, using shut-off,and T fittings, but you sound as if you have a system leak on the intake side of pump. I would check all lines, and especially gaskets, and the filter mounts first, then look at primer pump area, she might have a small air leak when primer is in stored position

  12. I use an old fuel cap and drilled a hole, and installed a metal valve stem, and useing a regulator pressurize the system. If pressurizing tanks does not work you might have a primer problem,I have run into that problem a few times over the years. Another thing off topic a little is if you every need to change lines below tank level is to get a friend, and a good wet/dry vacuum, and put hose in top of tank(not in fuel, pack rags around hose to make a "seal" and turn it on. I used to do it that way to change crossovers, and other lines below tank level

  13. Sorry intake hose I was talking about was air intake into carb. THANX so very much for the responses,am getting ahold of co-owner so we can go check out these ideas. Got 1 more question..could it be the carb to manifold gasket is split? getting hot it spreads, and gets to much air,and causes her to quit?

  14. Hi from south central pa. Home to hershey chocolate, reeses, and good ol lebanon bologna. Been a mack lover forever, being a fire engine nut,and being in mack central. Alot of the depts here were all mack from the 40's till they stopped making them. We still have our 79 CF600. she has not had any engine work done to her in her entire working life, and she still pumps with the best of them. She is our pride and joy,and just took another 1st place trophy for best appearing, and equipped unit in her age group. The mack that is my avatar is a 73 CF^00,and was my first baby so to speak, first mack i drove, and put tons of hours driving her,and running her pump.

  15. Nothing has been done to the motor, except for filters, there is a "juryed"rigged intake hose to the carb. Think plugs have been in for a while. Guess next chance I get will check carb internally for gumming, and get a gauge to check pressure of gas. co-owner ran it today, and she was cutting out as he was running it. I believe you are correct as in fuel supply problem.

  16. Did you try interstate mack in hagerstown? they build cabs, and I believe refurbed ones also. Maybe try to get ahold of les McClure from harrisburg fire. He is retired ,but he knows where to get parts for old cf's. after all he kept HFD rigs running forever. Maybe SWAb up in E-ville can do something with her?

  17. I co-own a 47 model 19 fire engine with a 707 thermodyne gas motor. Recently when you get to operating temp. or near, she bogs down when you apply pressure to the accelarator, and trying any kind of hill is a definite no-no.if you let it cool down she'll restart. Has new gas filters, and fresh tank of gas....now I have hardly ever worked on gas engines, and she has a dual ignition set up(diesel man through and through). was wondering if it was from running years of unleaded fuel or maybe sludge built up over years? Trying to get it to run properly as we want to take it on a 45 mile round trip to an antique fire apparatus show, and would like to run the pump while there. Thanks for any,and all help.
