Well I have been mulling this over

Ethanol fuel is what it is, Im as tight as a fishes ass so I buy the cheapest fuel I can and never have any issues

    And it is E10

Aluminium fuel tanks Im pretty sure used on light planes, drag cars and so on

As such I think it will be fine with petrol

So Im thinking if you want reliability that just starts and runs and gives the best economy

Electronic throttle body fuel injection, holly and the like make complete systems that include a new electronic dizzy

Doing this should make it as reliable as a modern car and I think the cost wont be huge

Apart from that, carry on, it is interesting learning

    Paul

So, what is this "electronic throttle body fuel injection" of which you speak? I don't care about stock or original, I just want it to run like it's supposed to.

far out thought; gas vs alum becomes a hassle , and staying with the gas ; even though you have the alum tank , acquire a steel tank and paint it alum ??

I wouldn't have a problem using a steel tank, but I couldn't find an aftermarket steel tank available anywhere and if I went with a used one, if I could even find one, I'd have to do all the cleaning and sealing process before I used it.

... Something of what is used to clean clogged kitchen sunk. Sure after test application on another aluminium part.

Funny you should say that- I read somewhere when I was online searching tanks and algae and rust and sludge and gunk and cleaning tanks that you actually could use drain cleaner to clean the tank out with. But the aluminum brightener seemed to do a great job.

  4. This was about all I could find about sealing new aluminum tanks. I think I'll just put the thing on when the strap rubber gets here and hope for the best. If I have issues I'll have to put a tank behind the cab I guess.

l'm thirty miles away from a non-ethanol pump. We make the trip when needed and come home with twenty five gallons (5/5s) in the back. And top off the pick-up while we are there.    .....Hippy

Wow, I guess I am lucky then. I only have to go from the blue dot to the red balloon to get non-ethanol. It's only a couple inches on the phone.

sounds like you need to put gas tank coating in it while it in a virgin...   sorry, I dont have a picture of a girl in a car..  But I do have this little Peach.. as Bob would put it..  jojo

I would, but I heard you don't use sealer in aluminum tanks, maybe it doesn't adhere to the aluminum or something, I don't know. I had 2 quarts of sealer but I already sent it on its way. So I think, from what I'm reading here, if I stick to non-ethanol and use gas treatment I should be ok.

  7. So, my new gas tank came today. And here's the issue-

I called 4 States because they didn't send enough rubber to go under the straps. I misunderstood, I ordered 2 but they sell it by the foot, so I only got 2 feets.

Anyway, the guy asked me if I was using it for gas or diesel. When I told him gas, he said "uh-oh, this tank is only rated for diesel".  I thought it said "gas or diesel" when I ordered it, but apparently it didn't. But it said "fits Ford F600" and they were all gas powered. I don't even know exactly what "rated for diesel" even means, but Dave (maint1) sent me this-

So I'm going to use the tank- any thoughts?

I wonder if it was crap from ethanol gasoline?

Possibly. Brocky advised me to only use non- ethanol in it, like I use in all my small engines. I was advised to do that years ago with small engines by someone with much knowledge about such matters, and haven't had any issues yet.

I'm thinking I'll get the 90 octane non ethanol from the Sheetz just up the road, put the lead additive in it, a can of Sea Foam periodically, and Sta-Bil in the fall.

I also have a bb rifle as well as 2 real ones

I gave the .22 rifle that my grandfather gave me to my niece. It's a Remington Fieldmaster pump, a very nice rifle. I do have a 700 Remington .30-06  but I thought that would be overkill.

My ex. had a freind to put a soda or sugar in the fuel filler..  We had a volatile relationship..    I still have the locking gas cap on it today..  been 17 years...  This is no B.S. !!

Uhh, yeah, I'd say you did! 🤣

I'm going to try to pull the top off the carburetor without destroying anything and take a look too.

  11. I went ahead and ordered the rubber to go under the tank straps when I ordered the tank. I looked in the gas hole with a flashlight and I could see all these dark blobs "swimming" around on the bottom of the tank. I poked them with a stick- a clean stick, I didn't want to contaminate anything- to see what happened and they would kind of break a part. The sample in the aluminum pan didn't come from the very bottom either, I just loosened the plug on the end and let it drip in the pan. I never saw such a change as that gas made overnight.

So obviously there was no rust, it had to be algae. The pick-up tube lacked about 4 inches from reaching the bottom of the tank, so that would leave a lot of gas in the tank, maybe that had something to do with it.

I probably could have put that tank right back on it after I cleaned it out with the acid and been fine, but we decided to just keep the new one and put it on when it gets here.

YOU'RE GONNA SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT RED RIDER!!!

I think it is a Red Ryder, I bought it at Walmart to scare away all the feral cats that used to be lurking around at the old house. Then neighbors moved in next door.

Well, that saves you replacing or sealing it, shouldn't need  either.

I ordered 2 quarts of the sealer in the morning, had to get 2 because one would do up to a 25 gallon tank. I didn't know how big the tank was, but I knew it was more than 25 gallons. When I tried to cancel the order that same night they said they would try but the order had already been processed. When I looked this morning it had already been shipped, so I'll just ship it right back when it gets here.

    Ordered it from Amazon.

  14. Oh, I forgot- turns out the tank I took off was aluminum too. I just assumed it was steel, because he was talking about the rust in the old tank, and the fact that it was painted black. But it's aluminum, it was so light when I drained it and took it off I was thinking I had gained some super powers, but no, I have not.

Watch This, Here, Hold My BEER...  :)

Gallon no. 2 disposed of, set a full jug in the barrel, put a small bag of trash in alongside it, poured a little more gas in, lit it, and this. PXL_20240410_215854085.thumb.jpg.c964c3506af64314eddcf1bf49f625d3.jpg

No big boom, no big suplosions, just a fire. I won't have much trouble disposing of that gas. No wonder the truck wouldn't run.

Only thing you might need to get would be a tank vent in one of the threaded bunks in the top since it's gas instead of diesel.

I might be wrong but it seems right

I think you're right, I thought about that too. Maybe they have an old tank in the junk pile up at FLM I can get.
