Dandy looking truck. And very cool story. It is nice to know that kind of history, especially those first hand stories from the original owner or grandson of.

One beautiful side of this hobby is when you along with saving a truck and getting it back to life can bring emotions to many other people. Starting from folks who just see your lovely toy at a truck show or friends who visit you to watch your progress and up to previous or original owners who might keep memories of both the truck and their good ole days.

Great looking truck you found!

What dies it have under the hood and as a tranny?

If it's original is should have a Cummins NT-6 or NT-6T  in it.
