Considering Mack Purchase

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at a 2005 CH. It has 900000 miles on it but has a factory remaned e7 460, rebuild Mack 13 speed, and rebuilt rear differential.  Truck condition looks above average.  My question for this group is how good is this engine, can the egr be easily eliminated, How solid  is their transmission and is a 3.90 rear gear to fast for this engine to cruise at 70+?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot comment on that engine itself. I have a 2003 Pre emission engine , E 7. Do you have any details on the reman ? Is it a 3/4 Remack ?  There are different levels of the reman. I have personal experience with this. You need to know if they did the full monty. ( IE , cam, head  etc). .I too would like to know if anyone is running this engine.  I would run a check on Rigdig.com on the VIN. I would also try to get the serial number on the engine and have a dealer look at the history. You need to know the level of reman, and they do not include the hang on parts. (starter, water pump, ETC).

Too much rambling, not pertaining to his question.

It is supposed to be a complete reman. Head, turbo, cam, injectors and all bolts on parts. A drop in engine I'm told. Air compressor he was unsure of. The dealers who did the work took it in on trade and did all the maintenance.  He said he would get me records. It's got a lot of new stuff, I just want to make sure they didn't polish a turd. I don't see many of these out there and that concerns me. My local Mack dealer is unimpressive, to say the least, so that also concerns me, but this truck is nice and the price is good. By the way, I'm not dealing with my local Mack dealer.

Brother deleted an 05 that sounds very similar to this one. It's not easy to say the least, but it can be done with a lot of time and patience. To be 100% honest, I'll have to reference notes, but I'm thinking you'll have to switch three of the wire harness pins for the ECU...rest of it is plug n play, but a lot of it. We had a 01 donor truck that we robbed the ECU, cab controller, complete wire harness, manifold, fan and air to air. We're old school and like the forward air to air and bullet proof fan. After two EGR coolers and 3 turbos in one year,  figured it was time to do something so we got the schematics out and started crossing everything. Engine has around 100k since we did it and so far so good.

We have have a couple 13s and several 18s and we love them. Knock on wood, we haven't had many problems out of Mack trans, typically can get a million miles out of them pretty easy.

I'd think you'd be ok with the 3.90s at 70mph.

One of my E9s is 18spd w/3.90s and stand up 24.5s. 75 is about all you can stand bc the straight pipes are singing pretty loud and I'm not as young as I once was.

Im from SlowHIO so majority of our speed limits is 60mph. Few stretches of 70mph (other than the interstates) but not all of it.
