Bendix Air Dryer

My MH was not spec'd with an air dryer. I have a new Bendix AD-IP dryer (bought it years ago for my H). Should I install the AD-IP or should I sell it and use an AD-9 dryer?

Thinking about keeping the AD-IP rather than spend more money for another dryer. The factory location is on the inside left frame rail behind the fuel tank. The air compressor is on the right side of the engine and the primary tank is on the right also. Will I create problems if the dryer is mounted on the right side perhaps behind the right fuel tank? The lines would be shorter. I read in the Mack Air Brake Manual that lines too short will cause excess moisture. TIA for your input.

I haven't heard about the short lines creating moisture, I can see hot compressed air cooling and condensing moisture in the system, that's the whole reason for a dryer. I have installed many an AD9 on trucks built without dryers in whatever location worked best, I don't think you will have any issues with the location. I will say this I have had to remove several airdryers and tanks over over the years to do transmission work, keep in mind what your mounting location will do to a future clutch replacement. I mounted the one on my 84 on the back of the tool box on the drivers side in front of the back wheels, it was never in the way working on a diveline or trans issue.

Hello!

While looking for data on my model, I've seen a data sheet specifying the air line length from the compressor to the air dryer. Now depending on air consumption (How many axles, what kind of work for the truck) this line was getting longer and longer. The thing is, when you compress air it gets hot - and if it's hot it mixes better with oil vapor and with water - steam. If you let it flow through a long air line, you give the air a chance to cool off, and the cooler it is, the more moisture the dryer can take out of it. So OK - in cooler climates, and if you don't use so much air, you can probably save a few feet of line without problems. But would it be worth it, when it gets hot and humid, and you have to brake a lot? Hope it helps, good luck on the installation and have a nice day

Pawel - what you state about line length makes sense. I will be attending TMC and MATS in March and plan to talk to the Bendix Technical Reps.

On my rs700l my ad9 is factory mounted behind the passenger fuel tank. It changes from copper to rubber hose near the front of the fuel tank.

Just add an alcohol evaporator and drain your tanks daily. That worked for many years and still does!

That is what is installed on my MH. Just thought I would install a dryer.

Ken, I may have a mounting bracket if you need one.

David, thanks for the heads up. I will let you know once I decide where to mount the dryer. The "to do" list is long and I don't have a heated work area so it will be a few weeks months until I start working on the MH.
