Rotors for a Mack CF

Recommended Posts

Im looking for rotors all the way around for a 1979 Mack CF fire engine. Apparently, parts are hard to find for these Kelsey Hayes Disk Brake setups or I have been talking to the wrong mack guys. I have NOS caliber rebuild kits and pads that I have found but rotors have eluded me.

Thoughts on who may have some rotors would be appreciated. I am assuming these brakes would have been used on mack tractors too.

We have now called everyone to no avail. Did Mack only place this setup on a CF? We have good calipers, pads, etc. just missing the rotors. Is it really looking like a complete front and rear axle swap is the only way to keep these old disk brake CFs on the road? Frustrated for sure.......

These may be the first parts I cant find.

What about metal spraying them and re machining them? I know it works for brake drums. Paul

Talked to Bepco... they are going to rebuild the calibers. I already have purchased new pads all the way around. Unfortunately, they have no leads on rotors.

This was all the information they had..

Grunite Rear Rotors R3205A

Rear wheel Seal CR48000

Rear Brake Pads AD8056

No one has any part numbers for the fronts.

I'm making head way, just got word from Gunite that this rotor is still an active part number.....tech support is trying to help me find out if the number is correct.

NAPA crossed referenced the Gunite P/N to this.

Paul we already saw that, wrong ones. Those are 5-hole. We need 6-hole. Yes the one pictured has 6 but read the item description.

NAPA cross referenced with out the suffix A , R3205 instead of R3205A. can't trust old people!

Are all the other dimensions the same?

If needed a machine shop can re drill the flange and plug the unneeded holes if necessary. I've had that done on axles and front hubs to go from 4 to 5 lugs, they pass NHRA Tech for safety up to 160mph Paul

Why can't you call Mack with your model and serial number, confirm the correct Mack part number, check availability, and if no.....have Mack cross the Mack number over to the vendor part number?

I will call again, my local Mack dealer is fixated on the new stuff. Thanks for the advice. I'm moving forward! Apparently a few fire engine accidents with these braking systems killed the parts market. I find it hard to believe Mack didn't have these on any of they road tractors?

Today's heavy truck disc brake designs, perfected by European manufacturers, are the best way to go.

But back in the late 1970s and 80s, Goodrich's fast wearing disc brakes gave U.S. operators a bad experience. The bad memory lasted in the US for quite a while. Even today, most cling to drum brakes.

If you have the Mack numbers......Have you or Patrick called Barry at Watts Mack? Barry may even see this. Shoop said he did.....and I like Shoop.....But when it comes to mechanical schtuff.....He's kinda out in left field. I'd feel better if you or me called Watts, and Gunite....And Mack......and everyone else.....LOL

So did anyone ever figure it out?  I just recently purchased a 1980 CF600 fire truck, and the calipers were sticking, the rotors got cherry red and the lines melted, caught fire, it was a mess.  now I'm in search of parts, that seem to be non existent. any help would be appreciated

You should try contacting the parts department at your Mack brand dealer first to check availability. At least, you should be able to get parts numbers. If they say through Volvo they're no longer available (NLA), ask them to please cross the Mack part numbers (if that's what they have) to the vendor part numbers. For example,  Mack dealers used to have a comprehensive Mack-to-Vendor cross-reference book. Or, I assume dealers can still call the Mack (Volvo) specifications department and obtain the vendor numbers.

The local Mack shop told me they can't look up any parts for anything over 25 years old. and that I had to contact the Mack Museum  to request information for my truck. He didn't sound like he wanted to even give me that much information.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Discouraging. Please do contact the museum.

Welcome!  Don't have info beyond some of the numbers posted above.  If you haven't already, joining SPAAMFAA may help widen the circle of information and parts sources for your rig.

  • 10 months later...

After quite a while researching, calling dozens of people and places I was able to find the parts I needed to fix the truck.

I was able to have my rotors inspected and machined by the local machine shop, but I reached out to CRW truck parts in Jessup MD, with measurements and they gave me a part number for the rotors in the instance I needed to purchase new ones. I ordered reman calipers from Haldex in Marion NC. it took months, and they lost one in shipping. So I had to send my cores to be rebuilt.

Part Numbers.

Rotors: Gunnite R3064x

Loaded Calipers: Haldex RH1002LX (fit both driver and passenger) with pads and hardware.

Wheel seal: Stemco Voyager 383-0164

Inner bearing and race set: Timken SET423 (bearing 6461A, race 6420)

Outter bearing and race set: Timken SET424 (bearing 555-S, race 552A)

Hub Cap: Stemco 343-4249
