fxfymn Posted October 11, 2015 Share Posted October 11, 2015 Start at the basics and go from there. Did it run when you bought it? If so, what has changed since then? Re-check anything that has been done since it last ran and get a friend to check it again. Is the battery disconnect switch on? Is there a "master" switch on the dash to turn on?Disconnect and charge both batteries; check to ensure they will hold a load; make sure they are connected back correctly (probably positive ground); check the wires going to the starter to ensure they are clean and connected; ensure the truck's ground connections are connected and clean; check for voltage at the starter when the start button is pushed; if you have voltage the starter is suspect; if not re-check the circuits. It really sounds sweet. A little slop in the steering but i think i can fix that. It looks a little jury rigged behind the master switch, so I'll look at that first.Thanks!One other thing... fxfymn Posted October 12, 2015 Share Posted October 12, 2015 One thing that is universal about all old fire trucks is that they will have some, and often a bunch, of jury rigged wiring. When I did my 52 I took a five gallon bucket worth of wire out of it and everything still worked. Municipal repair shops are generally not known for there excellent mechanics so instead of troubleshooting a problem the quick fix is to cut the old wire and run a new one. Additionally, the station troops often add items without doing it properly. In fact one of the distinguishing features of FDNY apparatus was the main electrical junction box was actually locked so the station personnel couldn't add their own goodies.What are your plans for the truck? Rodney Ledford Posted October 13, 2015 Author Share Posted October 13, 2015 I found the problem, i think. 2 red wires were completely corroded off the alternator. I suspect it was an overload situation caused by a bad terminal on the master switch. It came from a snowy area and has seen its fair share of highway salt. The FD kept it pretty on the outside, just not so much underneath. Anyway, i'm charging one of the batteries tonight. Tomorrow, i'll re connect the wires and install the freshly charged battery. Wish me luck.As for what, i will do with it... Well, it's powerful pump will maintain the water level in an isolated irrigation supply pond when needed from a nearby creek and maybe a parade or two once its reliable again. ⚓️Being new to all this, i have to go slowly. The original is a leece - neville 2526J 14v 108amp, and hard to find. Does anyone out there know if a leece - neville 2800J 12v 160amp will fit and work? They look the same. HELP! farmer52 Posted October 15, 2015 Share Posted October 15, 2015 A hight amp alternator should okay as long as they match. I recently replaced my 100amp Remy with a Remy 140amp. Bigger is okay but again, make sure the mounting and terminals are the same. I am no expert but just going on my experience. If he does not have one in stock, he can either tell you where to find one, or he can tell you if he can rebuild yours or not.
